Jules Evans is a journalist and research fellow at Queen Mary University in London and he is interested in emotions and how people seek ecstatic experiences. This is an entertaining account of the ways people seek ecstasy in what has become a post-religious culture. He goes from a psychedelic conference to a 5Rhythms event in Tufnell Park to the transhumanists in Silicon Valley, observing the positives and the pitfalls of getting “out of it” in its myriad forms. It caused me to look at my own yearnings to escape but also the fears I have experienced when the sense of losing control hasn’t felt so comfortable. It’s a rewarding journey with a very sympathetic guide.
