Written by a self-confessed “wolfaholic” who gets withdrawal when she hasn’t been around a wolf for a while, this book is an extended love letter to these beautiful animals which seem to know a way of getting into our hearts, despite their fearsome reputation. The arc of the book covers her three big wolf moments: her first “kiss” from a wolf when she starts working in a research institute in Indiana, her first encounter with a wild wolf in the snows of Minnesota and her first glimpse of a wild wolf in her native country while she is on the train from Leipzig to Frankfurt. The narrative is wonderful and full of lovely stories but of course there is plenty here about what we can learn from wolves and their everyday behaviour. There is also much to learn from encountering a wild carnivorous mammal in its untamed home.
