It’s extremely satisfying that a book about fungi can become a Sunday Times bestseller, but this book has made a huge impact, both in the culture and in sales. It’s now in paperback and I was keen to read it and feature it in the magazine, especially as Merlin is the son of Rupert Sheldrake and Jill Purce. This tells you everything you need to know about fungi and their amazing abilities to communicate, to break down rocks, to clear up pollution, to enhance cooking and to alter consciousness. And that’s just a few of their capabilities. From an overview in the introduction of all they can achieve, the author goes on to shorter chapters about truffles, psychedelics and brewing and meets fascinating scientists, activists and enthusiasts along the way. There’s something weird and unsettling about fungi, and this book at least helps us understand them more.
