Facing ageing and ever-closer death is a challenge for almost all of us. This rich and elegant book addresses this issue as it especially relates to men, although any gender of person could appreciate it. Men though can find it especially hard to face up to loss of virility and status and they are also less likely to pick up a book on the subject. So I would urge all men in middle age or friends or family who love them to read this book. The author is American but everything he discusses is universal. The text is full of stories and exercises and meditations that will help us reframe the whole process of ageing. It’s very easy to read and it’s encouraging. I can’t claim that it empowers us to stave off the inevitable, but it offers strategies to embrace ageing peacefully. The author is a Zen teacher but this is not a Buddhist book and doesn’t require any Buddhist interest.
