Ajahn Brahm is one of my favourite authors and his books – such as Don’t Worry Be Grumpy – are entertaining yet profound explanations of spiritual issues and mind states. Sure, he’s a Buddhist abbot in Australia, but the teachings are universal and primarily Buddhist influenced, rather than Buddhist in themselves. Here he gets together with a teacher in the Chinese Zen tradition to discuss adversity, everything falling apart and how you deal with disaster. In Ajahn Brahm’s case it was being expelled from his beloved Buddhist tradition because he ordained women as nuns who would be on an equal footing with their male counterparts. These wise teachings are also sometimes laugh out loud funny, but more than anything they will inspire us to deal with the most challenging situations with courage and equanimity.
