Dr Jo is the author of Bearing the Unbearable and this book is subtitled Compassionate Words for Bearing the Unbearable. So it’s a collection of short extracts from the previous title plus quotations and other brief aphorisms, all designed to be glanced at to help you live with your grief. There is also much new material she has written. The book itself is a nice size and can be carried around on your pocket or in a handbag or other small bag. Dr Jo lost her newborn daughter at birth and this led her to become a trusted grief and trauma counsellor. Her hope is that it will make you feel less alone, because our culture has a tendency to make the bereaved feel isolated. It’s an immensely wise and compassionate book. In the end, grieving is indeed loving.
