The first thing to say is that this book is American, so some of the resources and regulations outlined in the text might not be relevant to British readers. However, beyond that, it’s a very inspiring and extremely helpful book. It’s a manifesto for changing society via Repair Cafes (one of the co-authors founded the first Repair Café in New York), Fixit Clinics and other volunteer-run organizations that can help people repair beloved and essential items for free. It gives advice on how to staff, run and sustain them and even includes sample posters and flyers that can help from an aesthetic point of view. There are photos throughout of people helping each other: these organizations can be situated in run-down parts of town and thus help regenerate inner cities and bring communities together in all sorts of ways. It even includes several pages with specific repair tips.
