Robert Thurman was the first westerner to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk and, although he did disrobe in due course, he remains the leading non-Asian authority on the subject. He has of course written extensively on the subject but here he is trying to be more introductory. The title is clever: Wisdom – not Ignorance – is true bliss. Buddhism is a philosophical system based on knowledge and experience, and the teachings are based on what you can find out for yourself. This book is deep but it’s readable, full of stories and references that you can pick up to take your exploration further. For now this is an invitation to find out about the nature of reality via the Buddha, one of the greatest teachers in the history of humanity. Oh, and you don’t have to be Buddhist or have any intention of becoming one to appreciate this book.
