The author Cait Johnson lives in the United States but it’s wonderful that this book has a foreword by our very own Caitlin Matthews. We always try and include books on ageing but this is the first one recently that approaches it from a witchy angle. It’s a manual for becoming the crone and it’s a rich and gentle text. There are wonderful illustrations throughout by Ania Aldrich including four colour plates in the centre that show the witches of the four seasons. This is the approach of the book, which tracks the cycle of the year and is full of recipes, rituals and other suggestions. Ageing is daunting and can make you feel down, but I think paganism is ideally placed to make it as joyful and fulfilling as it possibly can be. After all, that’s where the figure of the crone was first honoured.
