ZEN IN THE VERNACULAR by Peter Coyote

by: Peter Coyote

Peter Coyote is a well-known actor and narrator but he has been close to the West Coast Buddhist community for many decades. It feels a little bit counterintuitive to include a book in Cygnus that’s actually resolutely secular but I feel strongly that for many of us Buddhist practice is something we can add to other spiritual practices, because its strength lies in the way it helps us actually live our lives. To an extent it’s a manual for practical living and then our spiritual striving can be something separate which is freed up by our stability as human beings. The author explains that the majority of Western Buddhists are secular and many don’t meditate, wear robes, shave their heads or believe in reincarnation. Exploring Buddha’s core teachings, the author shares his own secular and accessible interpretations of the Four Noble Truths, the Three Treasures and the Eightfold Path. These are invaluable teachings.
