I remember an earlier book by Edward Tick called War and the Soul, and it was about trying to heal veterans of conflict. This has a broader perspective as he describes the experiences of others across his 25 years of guiding people on pilgrimages to Greece. He mostly goes to the sites of Ancient Greek civilization, such as Thermopylae, Delos and Delphi and the book contains evocative photographs and drawings. It outlines in practical terms all the different healing techniques he and his fellow pilgrims use, such as dream incubation, oracles and sacred theatre. All these techniques have been abandoned across the past 3000 years, but the Greeks understood that to heal the body you have to work on the soul. The book includes many amazing stories of healing. It’s a fascinating account that really makes you believe in humanity and our amazing depths.
