POWER OF NAMING by Melanie Dewberry

by: Melanie Dewberry

This is a good and subtly different personal empowerment title. The author is of both African American and Native American descent, and she uses the best of both traditions in a creative and imaginative way. It involves finding your name, who you are deep inside, away from all the boxes society puts you into. She tells many stories of how she moved deeper into the Native tradition with its elders, which made me long to be under the stars in the American wilderness. There are plenty of exercises too involving deep imagination and radical honesty – it’s challenging in an exciting way.
