Please forgive me for including this book, but it’s one that I commissioned myself for Watkins Publishing. Stephen is an incredible art curator and he wrote a previous Cygnus title called All Good Things, and Mat is a founding member of the rock band Suede. Sorry also to all members who aren’t resident in England, but it’s about what England might be, about how it expresses itself through art, culture and mysticism, and about what the people who live here - whether they were born here or have come later in their life - have contributed to the visionary fabric of this country. Stephen has selected some amazing images from photography, painting and drawing plus pictures of masks, sculptures and folk costumes and placed them before us with little comment, so that we can gather a sense of who we are and what is best about this country, free from hollow statements.
